Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

To establish a national whale centre in Picton. Interpret the history and heritage associated with New Zealand whales and whaling. To use the whale metaphor to communicate and exemplify broader issues. Provide educational opportunities to further the public's understanding or enjoyment of marine mammals, sustainability and innovation. Promote the future protection of marine mammals and marine ecosystems, and promote the inherent themes of sustainability and innovation on a regional, national and international basis.

Entity Structure

The Trust is a Charitable Trust, governed by a Trust Board, with up to 7 Trustees. The power to appoint new, additional or replacement Trustees is vested in the majority of the Trustees for the time being. In exercising their power to appoint Trustees, the Trustees will be mindful of the need to provide balanced representation in the Trust, including appropriate representation for relevant interest groups.
