Charitable Purpose
The Society was founded in 1957 to promote amongst Members and the general public an appreciation and deeper knowledge of the works of W.A. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, and of other light operas, operettas and early musicals, by undertaking regular stage productions and concerts of the highest possible standards, and by developing strategies to make Society membership and participation in productions and concerts attractive to a wide range of age groups and backgrounds, and in particular to younger singers and actors who are at the beginnings of possible professional careers to enable them to take principal roles. The Society also exists to educate artists in this range of work, and places a particular focus on attracting and developing the skills and knowledge of younger and/or less experienced singers, actors and musicians and developing them as capable performers.
