Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

Community of the Sacred Name ("the Community") is a trust that facilitates the lives of those committed to our Anglican Religious Order. The aim is to assist our members to live the Religious Life in response to the call of God, to His glory and for the extension of His Kingdom, by assisting and furthering the life and work of the three Tikanga Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia (Māori: Te Hahi Mihinare ki Aotearoa ki Niu Tireni, ki Nga Moutere o Te Moana Nui a Kiwa; formerly the Church of the Province of New Zealand), or any part of the Church in communion with it. ‘As a living part of the Church of God the Community shall seek to be responsive to the needs of the world through prayer and service.’

Entity Structure

Tier 3 charitable trust The entity structure is contained in the Community’s Order (a customary ecclesiastical document) and Constitution. Regular Chapter meetings are held. There are currently 9 sisters' with life vows to the community, residing between New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. Mother Superior is elected every 5 years by Chapter. There is; one External Visitor (currently the Bishop of the Diocese of Christchurch), a Warden and a Chaplain. An independent advisory finance committee exists
