Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

The “Russell Centennial Museum” was established in 1956 as part of a Charitable Trust owned and administered by the people of Russell. In 1970 the name was changed to “Captain Cook Memorial Museum” and in 1991 the name was changed again and is now known as “Russell Museum – Te Whare Taonga O Kororareka” Its principal aim is to preserve and reflect the history of Russell and its environs. The function of the museum is to collect and preserve artifacts and natural history objects, to exhibit and interpret them, and to undertake research on the social and natural history of Russell and its environs. The museum develops and cares for its collections for present and future generations.
