The Ngunguru Sandspit Protection Society Incorporated was formed on 7 February 2007 to save the Ngunguru Sandspit from developers who planned to built 350 houses on the sandspit. 83 ha became Public Conservation Land under DoC administration in September 2011. 16 ha remain to be protected.

Entity Structure

Two categories of Members: Full Members and Associate (Friends of the Society) Members. Officers comprise the Patron, the Chairperson, the Secretary and the Treasurer. The Executive Committee comprises the Officers - excluding the Patron - plus 6 other Executive Committee Members who are elected by Full Members at the AGM. Term of office is one year but they can stand for re-election. Associate Members can attend meetings but cannot vote or stand for election to the Executive Committee.
