Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

To provide a free service in Upper Hutt for adults who want to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. To treat everybody with respect and dignity. To provide a service which is accessible and flexible, free, confidential, and based on student needs. People being drawn into an attractive and inviting environment and achieving their goals.

Entity Structure

The organisation was founded in 1979 and became an Incorporated Society in1991. At this stage it was known as Upper Hutt ARLA Inc. The name was changed to Read Write Plus in 2001. Charitable Status was gained in 2007. Read Write Plus is a member of Literacy Aotearoa, which has its National Office in Auckland. The Governing Committee at present comprises a team of elected past tutors and 2 external members. A Learning Manager is paid to run the service.
