Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

Christian World Service (CWS) is the development, justice and aid agency of partner Churches in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Partner Churches are Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia, Methodist Church of New Zealand, PresbyterianChurch of Aotearoa New Zealand, Religious Society of Friends and Christian Churches New Zealand. We work to end poverty and injustice throughout the world by supporting communities working for better lives and livelihoods, providing humanitarian relief in times of disaster, and campaigning against the causes of global poverty. We respond to people's need regardless of race or religion.

Entity Structure

The business and operation of CWS are governed by the CWS Board which maintains an overview of the organisation and is responsible for approving all policies, strategic plan, annual plan, and annual accounts and for employing staff. The Board consists of up to five persons from partner churches, one person nominated by the Supporter's Council, 3 persons chosen for their skills and expertise. please refer to Annual accounts entity information for more details.

Annual Returns

Annual Returns are due within 6 months of a charity’s balance date (financial year-end), or a longer period if an extension has been granted.


This charity has been granted an exemption from filing an annual return by 31 December 2008 under Section 43 of the Charities Act 2005. The first annual return is due by 31 December 2009.
